"Boredom" - Why It Matters and Why You Don't Always Need to Entertain Your Child

"Mum, I'm bored!"
It's one of the most repeated phrases, especially during the long summer days. Sometimes we hear it with a bit of a whine, other times with their whole body sprawled across the floor. And in that moment, the parent slips into the role of entertainer - with a game, an idea, an activity. Out of fear that the child will get "bored", that they won't develop, that they're not stimulated enough. But actually, boredom can be a priceless gift.

Boredom creates inner space. When a child isn't handed a ready-made answer for what to do, they start looking inward - into themselves, their memories, their ideas. It's precisely in these moments that the most original games are born, the most creative stories, the boldest experiments with boxes, cushions and blankets. Free time in which nothing happens is like a blank canvas, waiting for the child to fill it with their imagination.

In a world where attention is constantly being pulled away - by screens, toys with sounds and lights, activities and lessons - boredom is a rare chance for a child to connect with themselves. It helps them understand what interests them, what they want to do, where their thoughts lead them. When we allow them to be bored, we give them room to choose, to be independent, to connect with their own feelings.

Of course, boredom is a challenge - for the child and for the parent. Because often, behind "I'm bored" lies a need for attention, for contact, for shared time. And in those moments, it's good to stay close, without rushing to "fix" the situation. Sometimes it's enough to say: "Yes, sometimes it really is boring... let's see what you come up with." Or simply to sit beside them and share that pause - in silence, with no agenda.

It's important to know that children are learning to tolerate boredom. It's a skill, just like waiting, losing, or handling disappointment. And if we always rush to "rescue" them from boredom, we deny them the chance to develop it. Boredom isn't a parenting failure - it's a natural part of childhood's rhythm.

Let's not be afraid of that moment when a child just sits, stares at the ceiling and doesn't know what to do. Sometimes that's exactly when the magic happens. And we can simply be there beside them. Not as organisers of yet another activity, but as quiet witnesses to their imagination taking shape.

Isn't Your Child Talking Yet? Here's What You Should Know

"She only says 'mum' and 'no'..." "The neighbour's child can already count to ten." "And mine's two and just mutters - is that normal?" Speech development is one of the topics that worries parents most, and for good reason.
