Toddler Growth Between 1 and 3 Years: Milestones and Wonders
5 min read От Мама За Мами

The toddler years, from 1 to 3, are an incredibly exciting period of growth and development. Witnessing their milestones along this journey is both exciting and eye-opening. So what does this magical process actually involve?
✅ Key motor skill milestones:
Toddlers between the ages of 1 and 3 make huge strides in their motor skills. During this time, we as parents witness our little ones' first independent steps, followed by their adventures in running, climbing and jumping. Encouraging their exploration and providing a safe environment in which to practise and refine these newly acquired skills is vital for supporting their physical development.
✅ Language and cognitive development:
The toddler years mark a remarkable leap in language and cognitive development. We can watch our little ones grasp the nuances of language, string words into simple sentences and build their vocabulary at a rapid pace. Engaging in conversation, reading aloud and providing stimulating toys and activities all play an important role in supporting a child's cognitive growth.
✅ Social and emotional growth:
Between the ages of 1 and 3, children increasingly develop their social skills and emotional awareness. They begin to understand emotions, express their own feelings and interact with their peers. Encouraging positive social interactions, teaching empathy and sharing, and providing opportunities for playdates all help foster their social development.
Encouraging good sleep habits: Children under 3 need around 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day, including naps. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine, such as a bath, massage, story time and cuddles, and creating a quiet, dark and comfortable sleep environment, is a great way to encourage restful sleep. It's also important to avoid screen time and stimulating activities before bed.
Story time and encouraging language development: Reading to our children and talking with them is absolutely essential for encouraging language development and a love of learning. We should choose age-appropriate books with colourful pictures and simple sentences. We can ask questions as we read and encourage our children to use language and respond in whatever way suits their abilities and stage of development.

✅ Independence and self-help skills:
Toddlers crave independence and are eager to do more and more for themselves. There are plenty of things that build this sense of self-reliance and independence, including: encouraging self-feeding; involving children in age-appropriate household tasks; potty and toilet training with the help of a small seat or step stool; and encouraging decision-making, from choosing a snack to picking which book to read, giving them the chance to practise making their own decisions. All of this allows children to take ownership of their choices and build confidence in decision-making.
During this stage, we see toddlers determined to dress and undress themselves, even if it takes a little longer or results in a mismatched outfit. This not only helps develop their fine motor skills, but also boosts their confidence as they learn to master these tasks.
✅Imaginative play and creativity:
Toddlers learn to engage in imaginative play, creating their own worlds and stories. Encouraging make-believe play with props, costumes and open-ended toys stimulates their creativity and supports their cognitive and social-emotional development.
Alongside language development, exposing our little ones to a rich language environment helps expand their vocabulary and language skills. Reading books, singing songs and taking part in conversations all provide valuable opportunities to learn language and communication.
Our little ones show a natural curiosity about the world around them. Engaging their senses through sensory play, such as playing with sand, water or textured materials, allows them to explore and understand different sensory experiences.
✅Encouraging empathy and kindness:
We actively teach our little ones about empathy and kindness towards others. Through gentle guidance, we help them understand how important it is to be caring and considerate people. This includes modelling empathy, practising sharing and taking part in acts of kindness as a family.
✅ Nature and outdoor experiences:
We believe in the importance of exposing our little ones to nature and the outdoors. Exploring parks, going for walks in nature, or simply spending time in the back garden, allows them to engage with the natural world, develop their gross motor skills and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.
Being present and practising mindful parenting has a positive effect on our toddlers' growth. This includes paying attention to their cues, being patient and fostering a calm, caring environment. This mindful approach allows us to better understand their needs and respond sensitively, supporting their development.
By including these extra points in our articles, we're able to offer a more comprehensive guide that reflects our collective experience and understanding of how to foster family harmony and support our toddlers' growth.
