My Child Is Shy - Should I Be Worried?

"Boredom" - Why It Matters and Why You Don't Always Need to Entertain Your Child
"Come on, say hello to your aunt."
"Tell her your name."
"Don't hide behind me - there's nothing to be scared of!"
For many parents, these moments are full of awkwardness. The child stays silent, looks away, hides in a skirt or whimpers quietly. And the parent starts to worry: "Is this normal?", "Won't people think they're badly behaved?", "Aren't they too shy?"
Shyness, though, is neither a diagnosis nor a flaw. It's simply a temperament - a way the child adapts to new people, situations or changes. Some children walk into a room and immediately make friends. Others watch first. Shy children just need more time to feel safe.
That doesn't mean they're any less capable or sociable. Quite the opposite - a reserved manner very often hides a rich imagination, deep sensitivity and a strong bond with the people close to them. They simply don't jump straight in. They need to look around, to make sure the environment is safe, and then, step by step, they open up.
The problem isn't the shyness itself, but how adults react to it. When we push a child to "be braver", when we apologise on their behalf or make them feel ashamed, we reinforce the sense that they aren't accepted as they are. And every child needs to know that their way of experiencing the world is valid and respected.
Instead of pressure, let's offer space. Instead of "Come on, say hello!", we might say: "When you're ready, you can say hello." Let them approach at their own pace. Support them with our presence, not our insistence. That's how we help them feel in control and safe - key conditions for opening up like a flower.

Shyness isn't a weakness. It's simply a trait. Some children speak with confidence, others with a smile, others still - with their eyes. What matters is that they're communicating, and that we're there to hear them. Even when they're silent. Especially then.
